ARTSCORR

In 1995, a statewide task force was formed to develop a program to provide arts opportunities and exposure to the arts for youth in the state's juvenile correctional facilities.

The ARTSCORR program is a collaborative effort amongst the South Dakota Department of Corrections, the South Dakota Arts Council and South Dakotans for the Arts.

Professional artists and arts educators serve residencies at the State Treatment and Rehabilitation (STAR) Academy near Custer to provide hands-on experience as well as a creative incentive and positive role models for the youth.

ARTSCORR is based on the following tenets:

The arts.

Improve individual incentive and motivation.

Foster individual and collective discipline.

Can play an important role for juveniles in correctional facilities in making their transition to home communities.

Build respect for self and others.

Provide opportunities for self-expression.

Promote a positive sense of community, family and belonging.
