Handicapped Ramps

Inmates at Mike Durfee State Prison build ramps that are given to disabled people in South Dakota.

Prior to the inmates involvement with this project, the state was paying $5200 for a 25' aluminum ramp with a 5' "porch." Now, they build different size sections of wooden ramps for about $750 that can be mixed and matched to fit the person's needs and can be recycled. Because there is only so much money available each year for these ramps, the cost savings from the manufacture of the wooden ramps means many more South Dakotans are getting them each year.
